About My Practice

There is no such thing as a good war or a bad peace.
- Benjamin Franklin

Separation and divorce are among life's most traumatic events. Competent, common sense legal advice is needed at this difficult time.

Television, films and advertising can promote the idea that an aggressive approach is necessary to protect peoples' interests. In some cases that may be warranted. For most families, an informed, open discussion will lead to resolution sooner and at less cost. Most importantly, such a process does not inflame conflict among family members.

Fictional representations of the legal system can give the impression that there is no need to settle unless the settlement is perfect, as a better result will be obtained in court. The legal system is a dispute resolution system, and judges will make a decision if the parties cannot. It is not common for one party to receive everything on his or her "wish list." When that happens, the other side often appeals!

Family members are in the best position to make decisions about their children, their money and their assets. Think of it this way. You and your former partner know the facts about your family. After you talk to me, I will know some of those facts. After hearing two hours of counsel talking, or even several days of parties and witnesses giving evidence and then argument, the judge will know some but not all of the facts you have told me. On this fraction of the relevant information, a decision will be made.

Nothing astonishes men so much as common sense
and plain-dealing.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

With each client, I discuss his or her history, present circumstances and future plans. I explain the law. We discuss the range of results clients may obtain by mediation, negotiation or in court, legal costs and how long the process will take. With that information, clients can assess how to proceed.

If mediation or negotiation are not the best options, or not immediately the best options, I will represent your interests effectively in court. I have more than fifteen years of experience in court appearances, including interim motions, trials and appeals.

I cannot guarantee that any client will receive 100% of his or her wish list. I strive to ensure that you will understand your options and that you will receive result-oriented, responsive and professional service.

I cannot deal with legal issues which are not related to British Columbia. If you are uncertain about whether your case should be pursued here, I am happy to discuss it with you.
